Dick Searle – CEO of The Packaging Federation
Dick Searle has spent 40 years working in the Packaging Industry. Although his career has covered most material sectors he started in the Folding Carton Industry, at Metal Box’s Speke Factory and later in the 90’s was founding CEO of Riverwood Cartons, Europe. More recently, he has been Chief Executive of two quoted companies and subsequently Chairman of UK and European trade associations. With experience of both large and small businesses, Dick is a passionate believer in the Industry and the very positive contribution that it makes to modern lifestyle. He has an enthusiastic, pugnacious style and is now the vibrant and effective “Chief Voice” of The Packaging Federation, (the organisation which represents ALL sectors of the Industry), a role he most willingly undertook in 2007. |

Dr Walter Lewis - Managing Director, Faraday Packaging Partnership
Walter Lewis is a latecomer to the packaging world. Trained as biochemist he has a 1st class honour’s degree and doctorate from University of Manchester and then worked in healthcare research before becoming involved with biotechnology. This ultimately led to Director of Research Support at University of Leeds. Since 1997, he has been seconded to Faraday. John Noble is Director of the British Brands Group, a membership organisation that provides the collective voice for brand manufacturers in the UK. Through its research studies, conferences, and publications it seeks to impact on those who make and shape public policy. It is part of network of similar organisations across Europe and represents AIM, the European Brands Association, in the UK. Sonia Raja - Senior Packaging Buying Manager, Tesco Stores
Tesco Stores, Britain's largest Grocery Retailer, recently appointed Sonia Raja as their Project Manager for the company's commitment to reduce its packaging by 25% by year 2010. Sonia previously held buying positions with McCormick Europe and Unilever Kenya where she developed Pan-European procurement strategies, waste and cost reduction programmes as well as environmental acceptance policies, mainly in the packaging sector. Sonia has a B.Sc (Hons) and also a MBA from Warwick Business School which involved working with Nestle in Switzerland and a period in the USA. Fluent in several languages she has travelled widely in her business career which originally began with working for a plastic packaging business in Kenya. A qualified ISO 9002 Auditor and Goldman Sachs Foundation mentor she is well qualified to understand |

James Clancy - Managing Director, Packaging Focus
James Clancy’s 40 year business career has been principally associated with the Packaging Industry – initially in development positions with J. Lyons and Cadbury, and subsequently in the marketing departments of Metal Box and Ekman Cleave. He joined CDC Ltd in 1978 and became involved in research projects on international paper, board and packaging markets and was the major contributor to many ECMA and BPIF reports on sector developments. Subsequently in 2002 he created Packaging Focus whose main activity is research, statistics and market trends of the European cartonboard and carton markets, preparing a number of funded public and private publications and management reports. James is a regular advisor to a number of organisations and senior executives and also a well-known presenter at sector conferences and seminars. |

David Barnfield - Managing Director, PiP Associates

Nick Higham - Conference host
Nick Higham is a roving reporter and analyst for BBC News, working mainly for BBC News 24. where he has previously presented Factfile several times a day dissecting and analysing the day’s major stories. He now covers a wide range of subjects, including transport, environment, science, consumer issues, the media and arts and culture. He joined the BBC in 1988 and spent 14 years as arts and media correspondent. Nick has presented programmes and documentaries on Radio 4, Radio 5 Live, BBC2 and BBC World Service. He writes a regular column for Marketing Week and is a frequent conference chairman and occasional lecturer. His ability to quickly understand issues and his skill in summarising them in simple terms makes him an ideal professional Host for our Conference. |

Christian Knapp became Managing Director of KBA UK Ltd in 2001 after 12 years with MAN Roland - where he was Deputy Vice President for sales of newspaper and commercial presses for the UK, Ireland and South Africa.
A German national, born in Vienna, Christian studied for a BA degree in Canada and then an MSc at the London Business School.
Under his leadership KBA UK has significantly increased its UK presence and installation base - particularly as market leader in large and super large format presses for the production of books, maps, packaging and POS products. |

Ralph Gumbel - Heidelberg
Head of product management Speedmaster XL 145/162 of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG.
Ralph started 25 years ago as a printer in the graphic industry before studying printing technologies at the university of Wuppertal. After several years leading the application department of K + E-Printing Inks in Stuttgart, he took charge of the department of customized machines of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. To complete his production knowledge he became managing director of a well-known print producer in Germany before being appointed to his current role 3 years ago. |

Tony Palmer - Sun Chemicals Packaging
Tony Palmer is Business Director for UK, Ireland & Scandinavia, this includes liquid ink and coatings, offset, and narrow web products.
He is a relative new comer to Cartons having spent much of his time in the flexible packaging arena. However his knowledge of printing inks and coatings is extensive, having started in this business in 1988. He spent three years on technical assignment with Sun in Sweden, before returning to the UK in 2000. Michael Clark - Pro Carton
Michael Clark is a life long worker in the paperboard manufacturing and converting industry and the present Chairman of ProCarton Europe.
Michael has been in sales and marketing for most of his career, focusing on the B2B sector, both in the UK and overseas. Over the last 30 years he has held a number of senior management positions, up to CEO level, and has, since 1995, been actively involved in the debate over forest certification. Michael was elected as Chairman of the PEFC Council in 2006. Previously he was President of the UK Paper Agents Association, and a Council Member of the Confederation of Paper Industries. Currently he is Senior Advisor at M-real Corporation for Sustainability and Environmental Affairs, where he first started working in 1984. |

BPIFCartons is the folding carton arm of the British Printing Industries Federation, the business support organisation for employers in the printing, packaging and graphic communications industry.
